Abalone grow by feeding on seaweed and kelp. The different varieties of seaweed create different colors in the shell as they grow. It is an organic gemstone, in the same category as amber and pearl. Turning the shells in the light can reveal many hues, from turquoise, peacock green and blue to rose pink, purple and gold shimmer.
